This book highlights some of the ways Métis families were undermined and harmed by various child welfare interactions, particularly post-1957 when provincial authority was granted to oversee the well-being of children. Racist and mother-blaming policies resulted in disruptions in Métis family life and the inter-generational passing on of the culture. Most importantly, “Calling Our Families Home” offers insight on family and cultural re-generation and restoration, despite ongoing interference through settler-colonial child welfare systems in Canada.
